In these challenging times, supporting trans and queer youth through meaningful, aligned fundraising is more important than ever. We deeply value and appreciate your creativity, passion, and commitment. Here's how to create an impactful fundraiser that stays true to our shared values and supports Outright's mission.

Step 1: Check for Values Alignment

When hosting a fundraiser for Outright, alignment with our Queer Ethic and Guiding Principles helps build genuine, impactful support for LGBTQ+ youth. Here’s how you know your fundraiser truly resonates with our guiding principles:

What Makes Your Fundraiser Values Aligned?

Transparency:

You’re choosing to fundraise from a genuine desire to uplift LGBTQ+ youth, acknowledging openly and honestly any past challenges or learning experiences you or your organization may have had. Authentic transparency strengthens trust and connection with the community.

Defying Assimilation:

Your efforts boldly celebrate the vibrant identities of LGBTQ+ youth and are explicitly aligned with anti-racist, anti-ableist, queer-affirming principles. You intentionally uplift and amplify these core values through your fundraiser, affirming Outright’s commitment to unapologetic authenticity.

Don’t Pink-Wash:

If you’re a part of an organization or a business leader and are choosing to fundraise as a part of repairing past harm or making amends, we encourage genuine accountability rather than superficial virtue signaling. Avoid "pink-washing"—promoting LGBTQ+ support for marketing purposes without meaningful change or action.

By embracing these principles, your fundraiser will deeply resonate with Outright’s vision and truly make a difference in supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

Step 2: Get Creative!

Inspiration comes from community action! Here are some exciting and successful fundraising ideas inspired by past supporters:

Hang Together: Organize regular gatherings of LGBTQ+ and allied community members, collect donations, and contribute funds to Outright.
Pride Bake Sale: Host a delicious bake sale during your local Pride event.
Dine Out for Outright: Partner with local restaurants or bars to dedicate a portion of their day's sales to Outright.
Art for Impact: Create and sell original artwork or organize a community art project or auction.
Tatt it Up: Collaborate with tattoo artists or studios donating proceeds from specific days or events.
- Black Meadow Tattoo, a tattoo shop, paid forward all proceeds from a day of tattoo sales to Outright!
Youth Moving for Positive Change: Partner with Positive Tracks for youth-led fundraisers that move bodies in space, like a roller disco, walk or any activity you find fun. Fundraising matches and starter grants available to get your idea started!

How to Frame Your “Why”:

Here’s a simple guide to help you shape your story:

Start with your connection
What does Pride, queerness, or allyship mean to you personally? For business or companies, also share about why it matters to your employees, culture, and the folks you do business with.
Do you have a lived experience that connects you to this cause?
Talk about why you chose Outright
Why does Outright’s mission speak to you?
How do you see LGBTQ+ youth being impacted in your community?
Invite others to join you
How can friends, family, or community members help make a difference?

Example 1: From a Queer Young Adult

"As a queer person who grew up in rural Vermont, I know how isolating it can feel to not see yourself reflected or supported. Outright was a huge help for me as a teen, and now I want to give back. I'm hosting a backyard Pride potluck fundraiser because I believe every LGBTQ+ youth deserves to feel seen, celebrated, and safe."

"My child came out as nonbinary last year, and Outright has been an incredible resource for our family. Their work with youth is life-changing. I'm organizing a DIY art auction to support their mission because I want every young person to have access to that kind of love and guidance."

Step 4: Launch Your Fundraiser!

It's time to bring your idea to life. Here's how to maximize success:

Spread the Word: Use your personal network, social media, and local communities to publicize your event. Enthusiasm is contagious!
Tell us about your Fundraiser: Use this form to tell Outright a little bit about your fundraiser so we can spread the word.
Social Media Boost: Tag Outright (@outrightvt) in your promotional posts so we can share and amplify your efforts.
Show Appreciation: Thank your supporters for showing up and making contributions. Every participant deserves recognition.
Celebrate: Celebrate your event's success publicly and within your community—every dollar raised is an impactful step toward equity!

Step 5: Share the Love!

Your generosity directly impacts LGBTQ+ youth. After your fundraiser:

Make Your Donation: Submit your collected donations securely online at outrightvt.org or by sending us a check.

Provide your name, the name of your fundraiser, address, and contact number with your donation. We want to personally thank you for your incredible support! Heck Yeah!!!!
