The Supreme Court Decision Is Coming — Here's What You Need to Know

Any day now, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti, a case that could impact the future of gender-affirming care across the country. We know how heavy that sentence feels — and how much uncertainty and fear it might bring.

Here’s what we want you to know:

Vermont’s laws remain strong.

Regardless of the ruling, transgender youth and their families in Vermont are protected. Our state guarantees access to gender-affirming care, shields providers from out-of-state legal attacks, and ensures insurance coverage for medically necessary care. That won’t change.

Important message for trans youth.

No matter what the Court decides — Vermont stands with trans youth. No court decision or any executive action will ever change the fact that trans youth belong and are worthy of celebrating in all of their amazingness!

The decision won’t override state protections.

Even a negative ruling does not create a nationwide ban. Instead, it may create confusion and escalate attacks elsewhere — which is why we’re working with our partners and decision makers to make sure our values remain strong.

We’re ready.

Outright Vermont is working with trusted partners like the ACLU of Vermont, legal experts, and youth-serving organizations to monitor the decision and prepare a timely, clear response. You can count on us to deliver legally grounded, emotionally supportive information — as soon as the decision drops.

We’ll keep you informed.

Watch your inbox and our social media channels. We’ll share updates and tools to help you understand the ruling and stand strong with LGBTQ+ youth.

Let’s gather in August.

We’re planning a community event in early August for reflection, healing, and action — together. More details coming soon.

No court can determine a young person’s right to exist, thrive, or be loved. That’s a truth we will never stop upholding.
